SAN ANTONIO - In what amounts to another modern day witch hunt, U.S. immigration officials last week arrested 905 undocumented immigrants in brazen sting operations conducted across Calif. In L.A. alone, 244 of those arrested are said to have “criminal records, ignored judges’ orders or illegally reentered the country after deportation.” Immigration officials didn’t say exactly how many of those 244 were actual criminals, but did point out that one of them was a convicted child molester. In the minds of a gullible U.S. public, the rest of them must, therefore, be child molesters as well. “Overall it was a great success,” said Brian DeMore, acting field office director of detention and removal operations in Los Angeles. According to the U.S. Bureau of Citizenship & Immigration Services (BCIS), an estimated 2,209,000 undocumented immigrants resided in California in 2000. |
